What is a Mailing List?

A Mailing List is an open forum for the discussion of a particular topic by many individuals, who use e-mail to send messages to each other. The process of distributing e-mail messages amongst the group members is handled by a list processor - an automated computer program that takes the hard work out of having to type in a list of e-mail addresses each time you want to discuss a particular topic.

The list processor has its own e-mail address, and each list member sends a message to that one address each time they want to send a message to the group -- the list processor takes care of the rest by automatically redistributing your one message to everyone in the group. In addition, if you receive a message from someone that the list processor has automatically redistributed, any replies you send to that first message will then get distributed to the entire list for you.

Its a very easy and effective way for people to chat amongst themselves, learn from others and help each other out on a particular topic.

The Purpose of the ACCESS VIRUS Mailing List, and How to Use It.

The purpose of this list is to learn from, and to assist other users of the ACCESS VIRUS. It is not the purpose of the list to sell WonderSpam products or advertise your new XXX web site. We dont take kindly to that sort of thing here on the access-list.' This list is a *free service* with the only restriction being that AMPFEA owns the content generated by the list.' This guarantees that list members' rights are protected and that information obtained from the list remains in the public domain.

Posts considered on-topic would be any general message related to the Access Virus, and/or any similar products including those released and to be released by Access, other competitors, etc. If you have something to sell, and it has something to do with the Access Virus, by all means post to the list -- but *not* obsessively, and especially not abusively.' If the list owner (Jay Vaughan, seclorum@mac.com) considers there has been an abuse of the mailing list, he will contact the person responsible, issue them one warning, and subsequently if the activity recurs will remove the person from the mailing list permanently.'

This list contains members at both ends of the 'technical competence' scale, and therefore don't be surprised if you see either a) very detailed technical posts and/or b) absolutely no responses to your post about extremely esoteric technical issues.'

Where possible, be as descriptive as possible in your posts, and try not to use overly large words and weird English slang -- the reason being that there are a large number of non-native English speakers on this list, who would have to struggle through your message with a dictionary if you make it too complicated.' Some of them are very technically knowledgeable, so it would be a shame to exclude them from any discussions just because they don't know the English words you're using.

List members are in no way obligated to contribute, but it is hoped that many of you will, thus making it a valuable and interesting forum for anyone that wants to know more about the Virus and other Access products.'

Who Do I Contact if I have Problems with the Mailing List?

There is a generic address for help with the mailing lists being run from TekLab. That address is:

access-list-request@ampfea.org

Please note that this is not an automated help program -- its answered by a real live person, so feel free to be as descriptive as possible with your problem. This e-mail address is answered collectively by AMPFEA members, so dont be surprised if you dont always talk to the same person.
